Should You Keep It Running or Winterize?
For most Tri-Cities spa owners, keeping the spa running through winter is the better choice. A running spa heats itself — the circulation and heating system maintain water temperature above freezing as long as power is maintained. Winterization (draining and blowing out the plumbing) is appropriate only if you're leaving the property for an extended period without reliable power.
Winterization for a Tri-Cities spa isn't as critical as it is for mountain or far-eastern Washington properties where temperatures regularly drop below 0°F. But if you do shut down and drain the spa, ensure the plumbing is fully blown out — standing water in any plumbing section will freeze and crack that section when temperatures drop below 28°F.
Freeze Protection — What to Know
Modern spa control systems include a freeze protection mode: when a temperature sensor detects ambient temperature near freezing, the system automatically runs the pumps to circulate water and prevent freezing. This works as long as power is maintained. The risk point is a power outage during a cold snap — a spa that loses power at 15°F can begin freezing within 24–48 hours.
In the Tri-Cities, power outages during winter ice storms are the primary freeze risk. Steps to mitigate: keep the spa covered to retain heat, know where the GFCI and sub-panel are so you can restore power quickly if it trips, and if you lose power during an extended cold snap (below 20°F), open the equipment bay to let any residual heat from the house reach the plumbing if the spa is adjacent to the house. Don't run the jets manually on a frozen plumbing system — thaw first.
Cover Care in Tri-Cities Winter
The spa cover works hardest in winter — it's the primary insulating barrier between the heated water and cold air. A cover in poor condition (waterlogged, torn seams, cracked vinyl) makes the heater work continuously without achieving set temperature, driving up energy costs and accelerating heater element wear.
Inspect the cover before winter: press down on the foam core — it should feel firm, not soft or heavy. Heavy cover means absorbed water (waterlogged foam). Torn or cracked vinyl lets moisture enter. A cover that passes neither test should be replaced before winter, not after — a waterlogged cover in January significantly increases energy costs and heater workload during the months when the heater is working hardest.
Water Chemistry in Winter
Water chemistry is easier to manage in winter than summer — evaporation rates drop significantly, and chemical demand from bather load is typically lower. However, cold water is slower to circulate and slower to respond to chemical additions. Test weekly rather than less often, and allow more time for chemistry adjustments to circulate fully before retesting.
Sanitizer demand decreases in winter but doesn't disappear — bacteria can grow in warm water even in cold ambient temperatures. Maintain free chlorine at 3–5 PPM year-round. Check calcium hardness monthly — it changes more slowly in winter but should still be maintained in the 150–250 PPM range.
