What Hard Water Does to a Hot Tub
Dissolved calcium and magnesium in hard water precipitate out of solution as water is heated and as chemical reactions in the spa raise pH. The resulting calcium carbonate deposits — the white scale you see on jet faces, the waterline, and equipment components — cause several compounding problems:
Equipment damage: Scale deposits on heating elements create insulating hot spots that burn out the wire. Scale on pump impellers reduces efficiency and causes cavitation. Scale on flow sensors causes false flow error codes. Scale on o-rings and jet gaskets prevents them from sealing completely, accelerating leak development.
Water cloudiness: When calcium hardness rises above 300 PPM, calcium carbonate precipitates into the water column as fine white particles, making the water cloudy regardless of sanitizer levels or filtration. This is the spa telling you it has more calcium than it can hold in solution.
Skin and eye irritation: High calcium hardness combined with high pH creates a more alkaline water environment that irritates eyes and skin. "Hard water feeling" — the slightly stiff, rough feel of very hard water on skin — is common in Tri-Cities spas with unmanaged calcium levels.
Sanitizer interference: Calcium and other dissolved solids compete with chlorine and bromine chemistry, reducing sanitizer effectiveness. A spa with very high TDS (total dissolved solids) requires more sanitizer to achieve the same kill rate — which drives up chemical costs and accelerates equipment corrosion.
Managing Calcium Hardness in Tri-Cities Water
The target range for hot tub calcium hardness is 150–250 PPM — which aligns well with the natural level of most Tri-Cities water. The challenge is that calcium hardness rises as water evaporates (leaving calcium behind) and as you add chemicals. Over time in a consistently used spa, hardness climbs above 300 PPM and must be managed.
Scale inhibitor: Adding a phosphate-free scale inhibitor weekly prevents calcium from precipitating onto equipment surfaces even when hardness is elevated. This doesn't reduce hardness — it keeps calcium in solution longer. Essential in Tri-Cities spas.
Partial drains: The most effective way to reduce calcium hardness is dilution — drain 25–30% of the water and refill with fresh water. If Kennewick tap water comes in at 180 PPM and the spa is at 350 PPM, a 30% dilution brings the spa down to approximately 275 PPM. Repeat as needed.
Annual full drains: Annual draining and refilling resets the entire water chemistry baseline, including total dissolved solids that accumulate over time and can't be managed chemically. This is the single most effective maintenance practice for Tri-Cities spas.
Using a Water Softener for Spa Fill
Some Tri-Cities spa owners use a small inline softener filter when filling to reduce the calcium coming in from the tap. These exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium, bringing hardness down to near zero. The result is water that's very easy to maintain but requires calcium hardness to be added back up to the 150 PPM minimum — water below 150 PPM calcium is corrosive to spa surfaces and equipment. If you fill with softened water, add a calcium hardness increaser to the fill water before running the spa.
