Start Here: The GFCI Breaker
The first thing to check when a hot tub won't turn on is the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker at the sub-panel near the spa, not the main house panel. GFCI breakers trip when they detect any current imbalance — including the small leakage currents that develop as heating elements, pump motors, and ozone generators age. A tripped GFCI is the most common cause of a spa that "just stopped working."
Reset the GFCI: press the reset button firmly. If it immediately trips again, there is a genuine ground fault that needs diagnosis — don't keep resetting it. If it holds, power should restore to the spa. If the GFCI holds but the spa still doesn't power on, the problem is downstream in the spa's own electrical system.
Tri-Cities Heat and GFCI Sensitivity
GFCI breakers in the Tri-Cities trip more frequently than in cooler climates because heat accelerates the breakdown of insulation on heating elements, motor windings, and wiring. As insulation degrades, leakage current increases — eventually reaching the GFCI's trip threshold (typically 4–6 milliamps) and causing nuisance trips. A spa that trips the GFCI repeatedly during summer heat is telling you that an aging component is generating leakage current. Identify and replace it before the leakage current increases further and causes a genuine shock hazard.
Control Panel and Topside Display
If the GFCI is fine but the topside control panel is dark or unresponsive, check the low-voltage fuses on the main circuit board — typically 3A or 5A blade fuses accessible from the equipment bay. A blown fuse on the control circuit is common after a power surge, which Tri-Cities residents experience more frequently than western Washington due to the region's exposed grid infrastructure.

Heating Element Failure
A failed heating element can prevent the spa from completing its startup sequence. Most spa control systems check element continuity during boot — if the element reads as open circuit (burned out), the control board may disable the pump and heater circuits as a safety measure, leaving the spa apparently "dead" even though the electronics are functioning. Element failure is more common in the Tri-Cities than in softer-water markets because calcium scale deposits on the element surface create hot spots that accelerate burnout.
Main Circuit Board Failure
If GFCI, fuses, and element all check out and the spa still won't power on, main circuit board failure is the likely cause. Board failures in Tri-Cities spas are often heat-related — electronic components on circuit boards have rated operating temperature ranges that are exceeded in poorly-ventilated equipment bays during summer. Capacitors on the board fail first, followed by voltage regulators and relays. Board replacement or repair is a professional job; attempting to diagnose board-level component failures without the right equipment causes more damage than it fixes.
