Calcium Scale — The Tri-Cities Jet Problem
Hot tub jets work by forcing water through a narrow orifice at high velocity, drawing in air through the jet body's venturi effect to create the characteristic bubble-and-jet feel. The orifice diameter is critical — even a small reduction from calcium scale deposit significantly reduces jet force. At Tri-Cities water hardness levels, visible scale accumulation on jet faces occurs within weeks of inadequate calcium control. The inside of the jet body — where water velocity is highest — accumulates scale even faster.
The diagnostic test: remove a jet body by turning it counterclockwise and look at the orifice. White or off-white deposit inside the jet body, particularly around the orifice and venturi opening, confirms scale as the cause of reduced jet performance. Clean jets with a commercial scale remover (diluted white vinegar works for light deposits; citric acid-based spa cleaners for heavier buildup) and reinstall. If jets return to normal performance, scale management is your solution — not pump or plumbing repair.
One Zone Not Working vs All Jets Weak
All jets weak: suggests pump performance issue. Check the filter — a clogged filter is the most common cause of uniform jet weakness across all zones. Remove and inspect the filter; if it has visible debris accumulation or hasn't been cleaned in the past month, clean it and test again. Also check the skimmer basket for debris. If filter is clean and jets are still uniformly weak, pump impeller wear or cavitation is likely.
One zone not working: suggests that specific zone's valve is closed, stuck, or the plumbing serving that zone is blocked. Most spas have gate valves or diverter valves that allow individual zones to be isolated. Check whether the zone's valve is in the open position — a partially closed diverter is a common cause of a zone that simply stops performing. If the valve is fully open and that zone still doesn't perform, plumbing blockage or a failed jet pump for that zone is the likely cause.
Air Lock After Refill
If jets stopped working immediately after refilling the spa, air lock is almost certainly the cause. Air trapped in the plumbing prevents water from reaching the pump impeller — the pump runs but produces no water flow. Loosen the pump union slightly (just enough to let air escape), then retighten once water appears. Run the pump briefly to purge remaining air. This resolves the majority of no-flow-after-refill situations.
Jet Bearing and O-Ring Replacement
Jet bodies themselves have a limited service life — the o-rings and internal bearings wear over years of operation and calcium exposure. A jet that rotates roughly, doesn't stay in the adjusted position, or leaks around the body even when the spa isn't pressurized has a worn jet body that needs replacement. Replacement jet bodies for most major spa brands (Balboa, Gecko, Jacuzzi, Sundance, Hot Spring) are readily available and typically install without tools.
